Smoked Duck and Prime Rib Class with Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply

By Kevin Sandridge

Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply Duck and Prime Rib Class

Wow, yesterday’s Smoked Duck Breast and Prime Rib class hosted by Chad Ward of Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply in Lakeland, FL meant a ton of expert knowledge shared and 30 plus attendees feeling informed, stuffed, and ready to make this Christmas cooking season one to remember!

I’ll post pics further on in this write-up, but first I want to say how special it is to have a professional Competition BBQ Supply store in your local area. Six days a week, I can make a 20 minute drive and get my hands on pretty much any professional BBQ rub, sauce, or injection out there. What’s more, when I’m interested in something new, Tim, Chad, Griff and any of the other Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply staff is right there to:

1. Listen to what I want to accomplish or try

2. Advise me on the best products to use

3. Give me a run down on exactly how I should prep and cook based on the rig I’m using.

Think I’m kidding about that last part? I’m not. More than a couple of people in yesterday’s Smoked Duck Breast and Prime Rib class shared stories of Chad walking them through cooks via text. Folks, that right there is what I call service.

Full On Learning – Made Easy and Accessible

One of the things that many of those in attendance remarked on throughout the Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply class was that Chad has a very easy-going, no-frills approach to creating stunningly flavorful food. Time and again people had those cool “ah ha!” moments, began jotting down a few notes, like where to get the best deals on Prime Meats for home and competition use, and said aloud how they’ll be using the methods Chad showed them for a long time to come.

Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply class veterans (having taken more than a few of Chad’s monthly cooking classes) said that what he shares with attendees puts the power to cook like an executive Chef in the hands of folks with very busy schedules and limited culinary knowledge. With the holiday season upon us, you can be this knowledge is going to make these folks – and their families and guests – very happy!

Ok. Let’s take a look at what it’s like to attend a Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply Class.

Photos From The Smoked Duck and Prime Rib Cooking Class

I like the set up Chad uses for the classes at Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply. See, they use the back patio area behind the store, which conveniently backs up to the outdoor seating area for Molly McHugh’s Irish Pub. Yah, you with me? That whole don’t drink beer thing while judging BBQ does NOT apply at a Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply class. Definitely a plus location wise.

OK. So here are some photos I took of how things went down. You’ll see photos of the wonderful duck breasts and the two 8 bone (boneless) prime rib portions chad picked up from Shawn over at Master Purveyor’s of Tampa, FL. Oh, and do whatever you can to get the recipe from Chad for the mushrooms he prepared. I’ve had pretty much every cuisine out there, across this country and 11 others. Let me tell you that these mushrooms are up there with any I’ve had – anywhere. And so simple to prep and cook!

As you can see, the amount of Duck and Prime Rib on hand from Master Purveyors was immense… and the class attendees ate very well. I even got to taste some, and let me tell you it was all awesome! I really liked what Chad did with the second 8 bone Prime Rib cutting it into Ribeyes effectively. This is great for a small family who might not be able to put away a larger cut of prime meat but still wants to get the good pricing that comes with picking up a bigger cut and breaking it down.

Needless to say, no one went home hungry. In fact, a few folks commented that they should have skipped breakfast that day! The line to eat samples of what Chad prepared spun through more than a few times, with folks eventually grabbing a pint over at Molly’s and heading back into Whiskey Bent BBQ Supply to pick up some of the products Chad used in the class, as well as a few items the shop put together for the holidays. The pre-assembled Christmas gift baskets are great, and more than a few of them flew off the shelves while I was there. They make a great gift for the grilling or BBQ enthusiast in your life who might want to up her or his game!
